Order - Disorder - Reorder

The Order - Disorder - Reorder was my first ARCH101 assignment. I had to choose three design elements within my Umbrella picture, cut those in squares and multiply each of them at least three times. Then came the hard part. I had to rearrange those squares to create a new composition.

At first I was pretty intimidated by this assignment. In a sense, I had to come up with something interesting with very little to work with. But then I started thinking on how I could get into my comfort zone. Patterns. I didn't know exactly what at the time, but i was set on creating a certain pattern. And so I began visualizing different elements of my picture, and how I could get those to work in a pattern-like way.

My first design element was the top part of my umbrella. It was a mass of strings, pieces of fabric, sticks all gathered around one point of the umbrella. Due to its flaring shape, it looked very intriguing to me, as well as viable. I could surely create a pattern with it. My other two design elements were the two concrete tiles. Because they were a bit textured, you could make out very subtle lines on them. I was sure I could work with these as well. And so I did.

The most important and most eye-catching part of my composition is the middle part. In order to create a relation between the middle squares I reversed two of them, while leaving the others as they were, creating a zig-zag kind of pattern. So as not to separate the middle part from the two others, I tried to create small connections. As you can tell by the picture, there are vertical lines, purposely not aligning with the umbrella pole. Secondly, I tried to rotate the other squares so that the very fine gray lines of the tiles could replicate the general zig zag pattern. I tried creating a pattern, a rhythm while still making the composition a tad exciting.

Of course there are things that could be improved. I am not one hundred percent satisfied with my composition. But it was still a very fascinating task and I look forward to the others.
